Drainage-G. Naber Impact of irrigation return flow on water quality was also examined on the input of nutrients to estuary, with spatial and temporal variation of EC, nitrate and total phosphorus concentration in. The impact of irrigation return flow on groundwater and stream water should be assessed to properly manage water quality.

Irrigation return flow originates from irrigation water, which is typically stagnant for a long period of time, and thus, water isotopic compositions and chloride could be inferred to be indicators of irrigation return flow.

Recycling irrigation return flow is a water-saving measure that helps to deal with water scarcity for irrigation. The study aims to estimate the reuse potential of irrigation return flow. Analyses of irrigation return flow taking into account land cover and irrigated cropland have shown the impact of heavy rainfall (Jiménez-Martínez et al.,Jiménez-Martínez et al., ).

Similarly, numerous studies focused on nitrate leaching show that an excess of irrigation can be the cause of it (Jalali, ; and Wallis et al. • Flow irrigation system: [Show full abstract] Evaluation reports a success rate of % which is better than the success rates of the approaches selected for comparison and tested on.

Wild Rice. Irrigation return flow can include contaminants derived from agricultural practices, and then deteriorate the quality of surface and subsurface water within the watershed.

Thus, it is important to estimate the effect of irrigation return flow on water chemistry/quality. from deep-seated layers and by irrigation return flow. Direct recharge is may have a strong impact on the quantity and quality of the river water.

California Irrigation Return Flow Case Studies. The variability in the quantity and quality of surface irrigation return flows from two representative California irrigation projects are reported. irrigation return flow may be contaminated by pesticides and fertilizers, and often, because of the high consump tive use, the mineral content of the return flow is greatly increased (degradation).

Thus, irrigation return flow is, on the average, less than half of the water diverted for irrigation use and has little reuse potential. Author: Viacheslav V. Zhurin Publisher: John Wiley & Sons ISBN: Size: MB Format: PDF, Mobi View: Get Books.

A major conservation practice in the Upper Snake-Rock (USR) watershed is the conversion from furrow irrigation to sprinkler irrigation. We compared the effect of irrigation system type on water quality and quantity at the watershed scale.

Six small watersheds ( ha) were identified with 5 to 70% of the cropland sprinkler irrigated and the remaining fields surface or furrow irrigated.

Abstract. This chapter presents a model for optimal scheduling of irrigation with soil salinity parameters explicitly considered. Irrigation scheduling constitutes an essential component of proper irrigation management, particularly under conditions of scarcity of irrigation water and when excessive irrigation and runoff cause ‘external damages,’ as, for example, in the Colorado River.

CONTROLLING sediment entering natural streams in irrigation return flow is a major economic and ecological challenge. A landowner often has little control over the management practices of his upstream neighbors.

But he may be able to use sediment from runoff draining onto his land to improve the land's topography. In so doing he may reduce erosion on his land and simultaneously lower the. Sediments in irrigation return flows arise mostly from erosion in furrows during irrigation, and sediment concentrations vary widely from near zero to several thousand ppm.

Reducing both erosion and runoff would decrease the sediment in return flows. Technology is available for reducing both erosion during irrigation and soil loss from the land, and for removing sediments from return flows.

By far the greatest detrimental changes in water quality due to irrigation occur as a result of field irrigation. The resulting irrigation return flows usually show increased salinity concentrations and hardness, but the relative importance of these changes varies, as is illustrated by data from studies on the Upper Rio Grande, and the Snake.

Return Flow and Soil Salts in Two Drainage Basins. Irrigation return flow in both a predominantly sprinkler-irrigated and a flood- irrigated drainage basin of southern Alberta was studied in and The total return flow consisted of about 3% to 5% ground-water flow with the remainder coming from canal and pump reservoir spillage (up to 96% in the sprinkler-irrigated basin).

Leuven, Belgium, pp. The study on return flow has great significance to sustainable utilization of water resources and water resources management of whole districts. However, due to the fact that the composition and the spatial and temporal distribution of return flow are extremely complex, the research of theories and methods regarding return flow volume is little.A mesh-type watershed model was applied to analyse the influences of withdrawal and return flow of irrigation water on river flow.

Discharges in the Tone River basin which has the largest catchment in Japan are simulated by the model for various conditions. The influences of withdrawal and return flow of irrigation water on the river flow were evaluated quantitatively, recognising that a large.Irrigation laterals transport irrigation return flow, including water, sediment, and dissolved nutrients, such as phosphorus (P), back to surface water bodies.

Phosphorus transformations during transport can affect both P bioavailability and the best management practices selected to minimize P inputs to waters of the United States. The objective of this study was to determine P retention in.
